Ask Amy: Dog with a herniated disc and degenerative disc disease

December 5, 2011

Q: My dog recently herniated a disc and I found out he has degenerative disc disease. He is no longer in pain after a course of steroids. How can I help keep this from happening again? He is arthritic, can I give him anything to keep him comfortable that will not have a negative effect on his organs like Rimadyl. I want to treat him indefinitely and I’m scared of side effects.

A: Two things you can add to your dog’s diet right now are omega fatty acids, such as salmon oil and a glucosamine chondroitine supplement. Lastly, try to keep your dog at a healthy weight, you can massage him to help with the arthritis and you can ask your vet about Adequan, this is something you can give your dog indefinitely that helps to keep joints flexible. Also, do not let your dog jump off of high places, such as a high bed, chair, sofa etc… Hope that helps.
