Q: My dog has been having separation anxiety. She is barking and crying when i leave for work. I don’t want to become a slave to doggie day care. What can I do right now, before having to enlist psychotropics drugs or a trainer? I want medication to be a last resort.
A: There are a few things you can do to help lessen your dog’s anxiety. Exercise is highly therapeutic for dogs. Before you leave for work in the morning try to find a dog run or a park where your dog can get a good work out. To help support your dog when you are not home you can give her “Rescue Remedy” this a botanical tincture and/or use a “Comfort Zone” plug in that emits pheromones that mimic a mother dog. Both these therapies can help, you can use one or both. Also, importantly, you want to greet and say good-bye to her very calmly. When you arrive home, do not engage with her until she has calmed down. If you are not able to get home for a mid day walk, hire a dogwalker to give her a good workout when you are not home of at least an hour. Best of luck!
