Ask Amy: I wanted advice on how to pick the right dog for me

April 24, 2012

Q: Hi Amy. I wanted advice on how to pick the right dog for me

A: Excellent question. As a long time professional dogwalker I feel like I have many times seen people choosing dogs for the wrong reasons. Firstly, do not pick a dog solely based on how it looks. Important questions to ask yourself are really about yourself and the lifestyle you actually have. I personally like lower energy, affectionate dogs who want to lay around and snuggle. I choose to adopt a senior dog who doesn’t require a lot of exercise and loves to lay with me while I read or watch TV. If you are an active person, you may want a dog that can keep up with you while taking long walks or going on a run. You really want to pick your dog like you would a companion, you want to “click” with them. It very important to be honest with yourself. Puppies are seductive and are less cute when having accidents in your house, chewing things up as well as chewing on you. Adopting an adult dog has many pluses. Firstly, you are making a humane choice by rescuing a dog, a noble thing to do. Secondly, you will most likely be adopting a housebroken dog, A MAJOR PLUS! Thirdly, when you adopt an adult dog you know what you are getting :)
